Using bFGF signaling inhibitor SU5402, we found that the self-renewing potential of neuroectoderm-derived cells required endogenous autocrine bFGF. In contrast, neural crest-derived cells do not survive on the inhibitor, suggesting that non-self-renewing progenitors (or fate-restricted progenitors) are required to generate HO cells. Furthermore, the comparison of neuroectoderm-derived cells and Olig2-positive neural crest-derived cells revealed a striking difference: the appearance of HO progenitors after the elimination of Olig2-positive cells in the neural tube. Uveitis, a potentially blinding ocular inflammation, is a frequent cause of visual impairment. The prevalence of use of a protective eye wear (PEW) item among American adults with bilateral blindness, vision loss, and ocular symptoms, is unknown. To estimate the prevalence of PEW use among American adults with bilateral blindness, vision loss, and ocular symptoms, National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2011-2013 data were used. In 2016 dollars, 4.1% (95% confidence interval [CI] 3.6-4.7%) of American adults have bilateral blindness and 1.6% (95% CI 1.2-1.8%) are visually impaired in the better eye. A PEW item was used by 14.7% (95% CI 13.6-15.9%) of those with bilateral blindness and 7.8% (95% CI 6.8-8.9%) of those with vision loss. A PEW item was used by 8.2% (95% CI 7.2-9.2%) of those with no ocular symptoms, 10.6% (95% CI 9.1-12.1%) of those with ocular symptoms in the better eye, and by 13.7% (95% CI 11.1-16.6%) of those with ocular symptoms in the other eye. Those with no vision impairment were more likely than those with vision impairment to use a PEW item (odds ratio = 2.0, 95% CI 1.9-2.1).
